File # Community Engagement

Surrey RCMP and community partners are working together proactively to address neighbourhood and business concerns in the Newton area.

On August 4, 2021, the Surrey RCMP Community Response Unit (CRU), Transit Police, Newton Commissionaires, Mobile Street Enforcement Team, Transit Security and Surrey Bylaws conducted outreach in the Newton core area. During the joint patrol, there was also increased enforcement stemming from public concerns surrounding illegal activity within the community.

The Surrey RCMP worked in partnership with the above noted partners and generated over 160 engagements with members of the community in one day. The enforcement on this day yielded the following:

- Four individuals arrested for outstanding warrants;
- One individual charged for breach of a court order;
- One individual charged for prohibited driving;
- One individual charge with impaired driving;
- Three separate investigations for possession of a weapon; and
- Four unwanted persons being removed from local businesses.

CRU and Surrey RCMP Police Mental Health Outreach Team (PMHOT) continues to work with community partners and vulnerable persons in our community on a daily basis. Police make referrals for services that provide assistance with housing, harm reduction, drug treatment, and mental health.

Surrey RCMP is committed to a long term integrated and proactive response that is built on relationships with our partners and the community, says S/Sgt Jag Saran of the Community Response Unit. We want to thank our community partners for their unwavering support and encourage residents and business owners to continue reporting crime and suspicious activity to police."
