Officer in Charge Awards recognize outstanding contributions

Every year, the Surrey RCMP recognizes police officers, employees, and citizens who have made outstanding contributions to public safety with the Officer in Charge Awards.
Due to COVID-19, the 2020 awards were modified from one large event, usually held in June, to many individual and small group presentations held over the last six months. Recipients were honoured for a variety of achievements including courageous actions, investigational excellence, and innovative problem-solving.
These awards recognize efforts that go above and beyond the normal call of duty, says Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards, Surrey RCMP Officer in Charge.
I am very proud that we have so many deserving officers, municipal employees and citizens who have made exceptional contributions to public safety in Surrey.
In total, 70 awards were presented, recognizing 220 people, including:
- Constable Jennifer Brady with the Surrey RCMP Financial Crimes Unit, who was awarded for her outstanding work in a multi-jurisdictional fraud investigation totaling more than $458,000 in stolen funds.
- Frontline officers, Constable Chamberlain and Constable Van Breugel were awarded for their quick and heroic actions after they discovered two occupants in a vehicle, suffering from a suspected overdose. The officers immediately administered Naloxone that ultimately saved their lives.
- Officers from the Surrey RCMP Property Crime Target Team were commended for their outstanding work in a complex project where three suspects were identified for their involvement in multiple break-ins, auto thefts and frauds in ten cities across Calgary and B.C.
Many others were recognized for their work in comprehensive drug trafficking, firearms possession, and sexual assault investigations; life saving measures related to drugs and mental health calls; operational tools and techniques developed to enhance service delivery; and community outreach initiatives that provided continued support to victims and clients.
Congratulations to all of the deserving award recipients.
