File # 2020-173780
The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident which has resulted in injury to one man.
Just before 10 p.m. on November 8, 2020, Surrey RCMP frontline officers responded to a 911 call at a residence in the 12700-block of 104 Avenue, after a female caller reported she had been assaulted by a man who was known to her. While officers were en-route to the location of the call, the complainant reported the man had left the residence. An officer located the man in his vehicle nearby and advised him he was under arrest for assault, after a brief struggle the man was taken into custody.
Once in custody, the man complained of injury. He was taken to a local area hospital where he was assessed and released back into police custody. On the morning November 9, 2020, the man was released from police custody and based on the medical information available at the time, his injuries did not meet the threshold for reporting to the IIO BC.
On November 14, 2020, Surrey RCMP learned the man was complaining of injuries that would meet the threshold for notification to the IIO BC.
IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s injuries. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca.
