File # 2021-575

A 21-year old man has been sentenced to life in jail for a 2021 day-time shooting in Burnaby.

Background:

On May 8, 2021, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Burnaby RCMP received a report of a shooting in the 7700-block of 6th Street, Burnaby. First responders arrived on scene and found 19-year old, Blerton Dalipi, suffering fatal gun shot injuries. As a result of the quick action of Coquitlam RCMP investigators who were in Burnaby on a separate matter, the suspect, later identified as 21-year old Ahmed Tahir, was quickly apprehended. A second victim, who had suffered non life-threatening injuries was later identified.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took conduct of the investigation and worked closely in partnership with the Burnaby RCMP, the Coquitlam RCMP and the Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS).

On May 9, 2021, the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) laid a first degree murder charge against Tahir in relation to the homicide of Mr. Dalipi.

On June 1, 2022, Tahir entered a guilty plea and was subsequently convicted of second degree murder.

On September 9, 2022, Tahir was sentenced to life in jail, without eligibility for parole for 17 years.

Though incredibly young, both Blerton Dalipi and Ahmed Tahir were well known to police, says Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. We’re happy with the outcome of this investigation.
