BC RCMP notifies IIO BC of an incident in Richmond

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Richmond where one man suffered injuries.

On August 22, 2024, shortly before 11 p.m., Richmond RCMP received a request of assistance from the Richmond Fire Department for a man allegedly setting a sign on fire in the 9800 block of Glenthorne Drive in Richmond, BC.

Officers arrived at the scene and located the man who was uncooperative. During the police interaction, a struggle ensued which resulted in a police officer getting stabbed and the man getting shot by police.

The man and police officer were both transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services to be treated for what are believed to be serious injuries.

Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit will be investigating the initial call for police and the subsequent assault on the police officer. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Richmond RCMP.

The IIO BC is investigating police actions in the incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
