Possible explosive device dropped off at a local thrift store

UPDATE: Navy explosive experts attended the scene at approximately 5:30 p.m. on August 10, 2024, and determined the device to be a fake. The RCMP would like to thank the Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt for its assistance with this matter and the public for their patience. The area has now been cleared.

The Sidney North Saanich Detachment has responded to the 9700-block of Fourth Street for a possible historical military explosive device dropped off at a local thrift store.

The call came in from store employees at around 2:30 p.m. August 10, 2024.

As a safety precaution, police have evacuated and contained the area while they await assistance from ordinance personnel from the Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt.

We continue to work with partners to ensure that the object is rendered safe.

Police are asking the public for patience and to avoid the area. No further details are available at this time.
