Cracking down on impaired operators on both land and water

Richmond

2024-08-08 08:17 PDT

Richmond RCMP in partnership with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia will be conducting a joint initiative at the McDonald Boat Launch on August 10, 2024, to increase awareness, prevention and enforcement associated to boating safety and impaired driving.

On average, 17 people are killed and 600 injured in driving related crashes in the Lower Mainland every year which is why Richmond RCMP and ICBC are joining together to remind drivers that police are watching for those who attempt to drive or boat while impaired.

As part of this joint operation, Richmond RCMP officers from the Vancouver International Airport, Community Engagement Team, Road Safety Unit and Richmond RCMP boat, the Fraser Guardian, will be at McDonald Beach throughout the day.

Keeping our waterways safe through enforcement is an extremely important part of our job, says Staff Sergeant Major Ross Lundie, NCO-in-Charge of the Fraser Guardian, In addition to conducting enforcement, we recognize the importance of education as it can effect long-term change in behaviours which ultimately can save lives. By working with our partner agency, ICBC, this operation allows us to do both enforcement and education simultaneously.

As part of this operation, media will have access to the RCMP Fraser Guardian. This will take place between 9:00 and 10:00 am in the parking lot of McDonald Beach.
