File # 2024-2450

Shawnigan Lake RCMP responded to a report of a two vehicle, head-on collision on Highway 1 near the Malahat summit on August 3, 2024 at approximately 5:40 p.m.

Early investigation determined that a vehicle heading south, a grey Acura MDX, crossed the centre line into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a grey Honda Civic heading north.

BC Highway Patrol units were in the area and immediately assisted with the scene. Upon police arrival, witnesses were providing first aid assistance to the female driver of the Honda, who was in and out of consciousness. She was transported to hospital in serious condition. There were also two young children in the rear of this vehicle, both of whom were transferred to hospital with unknown injuries.

The male driver and female passenger of the Acura received minor injuries. Neither alcohol nor drug use appear to be factors in the collision at this time.

Both northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours, and re-opened around 9:15 p.m. The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is involved in the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the collision.

Anyone who may have witnessed the event or events leading up to the collision, including dash cam footage, is asked to call the Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514.
