File # 2024-5434

On Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at 4:31 am, Williams Lake RCMP received a report of a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed on Western Avenue in the city. The vehicle was described as a late 90’s burgundy Chevrolet pick-up.

Police immediately began patrols in efforts to find the vehicle and at approximately 4:50 am, police located the pick-up on Mackenzie Avenue, travelling at speeds well over 100km/h. The vehicle narrowly missed colliding with two vehicles. Police could clearly see the driver and identity was established. Due to the potential high risk to public safety, police did not pursue the pick-up.

At 5:00 am, while conducting an unrelated traffic stop on 3rd Avenue, police saw the same vehicle travelling at high rates of speed along 3rd Avenue coming dangerously close to the officer who quickly got back in the police car due to the suspects aggressive and dangerous driving.

At 5:30 am, police saw the vehicle on Mackenzie Avenue nearly striking a civilian, speed away and later attempted to ram two other police cars.

At 6:18 am, police were advised that vehicle, now on fire, was on Moon Ave and that both occupants had fled on foot. Moments later police located two men, on foot, on 3rd Avenue. Both adult men, known to police, were arrested without incident.

The driving behavior displayed by the suspect put many lives in harms way. This behavior will not be tolerated and we are thankful no one was injured, said S/Sgt Brad McKinnon, Operations NCO Williams Lake RCMP.

Both men remain in custody at this time and the investigation is ongoing. If anyone witnessed this or if there is anyone who may have video evidence of this driver and his vehicle, you are asked to call the Williams Lake RCMP at (250) 392-6211.
