File # 2024-1219

BCHP-Campbell River officers impounded an impaired driver in a rental truck travelling almost double the speed limit in the construction zone.

On June 26, 2024, at 09:36 AM, BCHP officers were conducting speed enforcement in the construction zone on Highway 19 near Comox Valley Parkway, Courtenay. The construction crew was in the process of repaving the northbound lanes of Highway 19 with work crews and equipment fully active in the area. Officers clocked the truck travelling at 106 km per hour in the 60 km per hour construction zone, pulled the truck over, and found that the driver was impaired by alcohol.

Our BC Highway Patrol officers saved lives by being in the right place at the right time. The construction workers on the roadway were put in danger because of the impaired driver, said Staff Sergeant Tallboy, Acting OIC BCHP Vancouver Island. If you are planning on consuming alcohol or drugs this summer, then arrange for a safe ride, and please keep roadside workers safe by slowing down for construction zones.

The officers served the driver with a $368 violation ticket for excessive speed. The driver was prohibited from driving for 90 days for impaired driving and their vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
