Possible missing person presumed drowned

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 10:08 p.m. frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officers received a report about two people jumping off the Victoria Street Bridge and into the Columbia River, in Trail, BC.

A 33-year-old Trail man swan way to the river bank after the jump, and was helped by bystanders on the bank. Officers suspected the man was experiencing a mental health episode at the time of the incident. Officers transported the man to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital for an assessment.

Officers contact Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue who deployed their rescue boat and conducted a sweep of the Columbia River for the second person. The search did not locate anyone. Local search and rescue groups conducted another search the next morning; however, did not locate anyone. Canadian and US border authorities were notified about a possible missing and presumed drowned person.

No people have been reported missing to the RCMP since the incident; however, officers have followed up on tips from the public. The investigation continues.

This incident was short in duration and still quite a mystery. We would like to confirm the sighting of a second person jumping off the bridge if there is any other witnesses to this incident. If you have any information, please contact us immediately, says Sgt. Wicentowich

Requesting assistance from public

On Monday, July 1, 2024, at 7:45 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District officer received a report of a man allegedly acting strangely on the hiking trail that connects Miral Heights to Sunningdale, in Trail, BC.

The man reportedly asked two hikers about the trail and for directions to Sunningdale. When the pair returned to the spot, the man was still there who again asked for directions to Sunningdale. Officers conducted a search of the area for the man after it was reported but did not locate him. The man was described as 40-year-old, 6’3, with balding, blonde hair, was shirtless and holding a faded red shirt, with black shorts, and orange Asics runner shoes.

Trail RCMP would like to check on the wellbeing of the man if identified or located. If you have any information about the identity or whereabouts of the man, please contact the Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment at 250-364-2566.
