File # 2024-10347

32-year old Christopher Yaskow of Nanaimo remains in police custody following a violent encounter with officers. The incident in question occurred on April 4, 2024 in the parking lot of a business, located at the intersection of Nicol St and Milton St.

On the day in question, officers assigned to the Special Investigations and Targeted Enforcement Unit (SITE) were conducting pro-active patrols in downtown Nanaimo when they spotted Yaskow. Yaskow was a suspect from a previous incident in which SITE was investigating. When officers approached and advised him he was being detained, the encounter escalated and took a turn for the worse.

During the altercation Yaskow resisted arrest. In the struggle, one officer was kicked in the head. Yaskow was eventually detained and taken into police custody. A search of his person located a can of bear spray and a loaded .22 calibre pistol in a cross bag he was holding.

Yaskow appeared in court later that day and was charged with Assaulting a Police Officer and with various firearms and weapons offences. He has been in custody since the date of the incident.

Our officers showed considerable restraint in dealing with a violent armed offender. His continued detention is a reflection on his long and varied path of criminal behaviour, said R/Cst Gary Obrien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
