Local man remanded into custody for breaching conditions

On June 6, 2024, Powell River RCMP responded to a report of a theft at the BC Liquor Store. Staff reported that a 25 year old man had stolen a bottle of vodka and left the store. Police reviewed the video surveillance and identified the suspect who was serving a sentence in the community on a conditional sentence order (CSO).

The suspect was located at his residence and was arrested for theft under $5000 and for breaching Court imposed conditions of his conditional sentence order. The suspect appeared in front of a Judge and was remanded into custody.

Powell River Courthouse glass doors smashed

On June 7, 2024, at approximately 4:45 am, Powell River RCMP responded to a report that the back doors of the Powell River Courthouse had been smashed. The suspects did not enter the building after the glass was smashed.

Police reviewed video surveillance and observed what appeared to be two youth, each throw a rock at the glass doors and then run away heading northbound.

Arson suspected in excavator fire

On June 7, 2024, Powell River Fire Rescue requested assistance with an excavator that was on fire on a vacant property just south of the Italian hall. Powell River RCMP responded and observed as PR Fire Rescue extinguished the fire. There was extensive damage to the excavator but no surrounding property was damaged. No one was injured in the fire.

The excavator had been spray painted with violent and racist graffiti prior to being set on fire. The graffiti was similar in nature to graffiti that had been found at James Thompson Elementary and in the lobby elevator outside the Powell River Library in early May, 2024.
