Sextortion, it’s a real thing

In the past three months, Sea to Sky RCMP has noticed an increase in sextortion reports to Police, specifically targeting our male youth.

Sea to Sky RCMP wants to bring awareness to this topic and encourage parents to have conversations with their children around on-line activity. Sea to Sky RCMP encourages reporting all incidents of sextortion to police and for people, young and old, to familiarize themselves with Cybertip!ca.

Cybertip!ca is Canada’s national tip-line for reporting the online sexual exploitation of children. Cybertip!ca provides excellent education and related resources, on what sextortion is, how it occurs, and what parents and their kids should do if they find themselves to be victims of this crime.

The Send a Naked Mole Rat is a great video that parents can use to engage youth in this topic and it can be located via the QR code or by visiting the Cybertip!ca website.

We know that to keep our youth safe, we need to spread awareness and encourage an open dialogue so that our youth know they are not alone to navigate these tricky situations says Cst. Katrina Boehmer of Sea to Sky GIS.
