Loaded firearm found after car crash

The Nanaimo RCMP is currently investigating a car crash that occurred at approximately 4 am on Bowen Road in which a loaded firearm was found near where the vehicle crashed. After a short track lead by Police Dog Services (PDS) one male associated to the vehicle was arrested while a second male fled and was not located. The incident occurred on Friday November 3, 2017 near the intersection of Bowen Road and Casper’s Way.

The incident began when a patrol officer observed an old model GMC Jimmy driving erratically southbound on Bowen Road. By the time the officer could turn his vehicle and catch up to the vehicle, the driver had crashed the vehicle into a parked car at an apartment building on Casper’s Way. The officer then observed two males run from the car and with the assistance of PDS; one male was located a short distance away. During the track for the two suspects, a loaded sawed off shotgun was found.

A 37 year old Nanaimo man has been arrested for Fail to Remain at the scene of an accident, Breach of Probation x 2, Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited weapon and Possession of Break in Tools. No description was provided of the second male and a search warrant is being carried out on the suspect vehicle.
