File # 2017-35035

A 59 year old Nanaimo man was arrested within 30 minutes yesterday of robbing a local barber shop. The timely arrest was made possible by an alert witness who correctly recorded the license plate number of the car in which the suspect fled in. The incident took place at approximately 2 pm on Tuesday October 17th, 2017 at Korner Cuts, located at 4059 Norwell Road.

Police were called to the business after an employee called 911 reporting a male had just entered their business wearing a surgical mask and brandishing a knife. The suspect demanded cash from the till. Without waiting for it to be handed over, he grabbed it from the till then ran to a vehicle parked outside the business. A witness astutely recorded the license plate number of the car before the suspect fled.

The license plate number lead police to a residence on Cardena Way in central Nanaimo. Shortly after arriving at the home, officers were alerted to a male matching the description of the suspect running through nearby yards. Officers quickly located the suspect and arrested him for the Robbery and Disguise with Intent.

The 59 year old male was taken into custody and released today on a Promise to Appear with his first court date set for November 28th in Nanaimo Provincial court.
