A local woman should count her lucky stars after her bike was stolen not once but twice in the same week and on each occasion it was found and returned on her.
The CCM mountain bike was stolen for the first time on or about October 1st from the yard of her south Nanaimo home. The owner didn't think to report the theft to the police but did post a picture of it to Stealing Nanaimo, a local Facebook group. As luck would have it, just three days later officers with the Nanaimo RCMP Bike Unit stopped a male in downtown Nanaimo who is "well known to them" and was in possession of a bike they believed was stolen. They informed this person his bike would be seized for safe keeping until such time the lawful owner could be found. Not surprisingly the male did not object in anyway. The next day one of the Bike Unit officers who seized the bike saw the same bike on the Stealing Nanaimo site and connected the dots. He promptly contacted the owner to let her know they had her bike and made arrangements to have it returned the next day.
A very grateful owner attended to the detachment as requested and after placing her bike in the rear of her truck, she carried out a few errands.Unfortunately for her, upon returning to her vehicle just 15 minutes later, noticed the bike was gone, again! She promptly asked several nearby persons for assistance and even offered small finder’s fee. Much to her surprise the bike was returned to her a short time later.
Social media sites are helpful and in this case the owner got lucky. They shouldn’t though be used as the sole means for finding stolen property. All thefts should be reported to the police. Additionally, bikes should always be locked and if possible registered with the 529 Garage app, said Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
