File # 2017 Camp Courage

The Nanaimo RCMP in partnership with the City of Nanaimo and Nanaimo Fire Rescue is pleased to announce a fun filled one day event entitled Camp Courage for youths 9-12. Cost for this one day event is $25 which runs from 9 am to 3 pm. The event is being held at the Departure Bay Activity Centre located at 1412 Wingrove St.

Camp Courage is designed to allow participants to find out firsthand what it takes to become a police officer or fire fighter. Through hands on demonstrations, participants will learn and be shown by selected police officers and fire fighters about their training, responsibilities and equipment necessary to do their respective jobs. From the Nanaimo RCMP there will be police bikes, boats, motorcycles and if possible, a Police Dog Services demonstration.

Fire Rescue crews will demonstrate many of the different jobs and roles of the fire department. Fire crews will demonstrate how they use fire hoses and water streams and participants will be taught how to perform bystander CPR. The fire safety house will be there to provide a fun and practical evacuation from a simulated house fire, and there will be other surprise activities and games. The officers from both police and fire are excited about the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences with the kids, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP. We want to provide the kids with an opportunity to experience and learn about positive community leadership with the fire and police departments and give them some practical skills that they can use in the community to save lives and prevent fires. said Fire Fighter Greg Finstad and Fire Prevention Officer Alan Millbank.

All participants will be provided with a T-shirt, provided a healthy lunch and snacks throughout the day and there will be many opportunities to earn prizes. Registration can be done through Nanaimo Parks, Recreation, Culture & Heritage by calling 250-756-5200. The event is also listed in the City of Nanaimo Leisure guide at activity number 152887.
