File # 2017-12554
On April 28th, just after 2:00 am, a single vehicle collision was discovered on White Rapids road by a passing motorist. An extensively damaged vehicle lay in the roadway after it had apparently lost control and crashed. The driver, a male in his early 20’s from Nanaimo, was alone in the vehicle. The driver suffered very serious, life threatening injuries. Members of the Nanaimo RCMP attended to the scene to assist BC Ambulance and the Extension Fire department.
The Air Ambulance was utilized, which landed at Chase River Elementary school.
Open areas are often used to assist with the landing of the Air Ambulance. They must be clear of obstructions and accessible for both air and ground crews. The school field provided a perfect location in close proximity to the incident stated Corporal Jon Stuart of the Nanaimo RCMP. The driver was flown to hospital where he is in serious condition.
The driver of the vehicle was still wearing his seatbelt when emergency crews arrived.
Investigators believe that without the deployment of the airbags, and the use of a seatbelt, the driver would not have survived the impact of this collision reported Corporal Stuart.
The roadway was closed for several hours while the police investigation at the scene was carried out. The Police Service Dog, in addition to a FLIR camera were utilized in combing the area to ensure there were no persons ejected from the vehicle. A Collision Reconstructionist attended due to the seriousness of the injuries, and further investigation is being carried out by the Nanaimo RCMP Municipal Traffic Unit. If anyone has information regarding this collision, they are encouraged to contact the Nanaimo Detachment at 250-754-2345.
