Male with connections to Nanaimo arrested in Victoria on weapons and drug charges

The Nanaimo RCMP Detachment Projects Team with assistance from Victoria Police Department and West Shore RCMP has arrested a Victoria man with previous connections to Nanaimo. Ashley BAIRD, age 33, was arrested in Victoria after allegedly committing a violent home invasion in Nanaimo on April 20th, 2017.
On April 20th, it is alleged BAIRD forcibly entered a residence in the 700 block of Haliburton St, brandishing a shotgun, tied up the residents then assaulted and threatened them.
The public was not informed of this incident as it was not a random event. BAIRD was identified early on in the investigation and the residence and its occupants are known to the Nanaimo RCMP with ties to criminal activity. said Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
Investigators travelled to Victoria and with the assistance of the Victoria Police Strike Force and General Duty officers BAIRD was arrested on Tuesday April 25th. At the time of his arrest, BAIRD was found to be in possession of 3 ounces of suspected crystal methamphetamine, 2 ounces of suspected heroin/fentanyl and an imitation BB handgun.
Following his arrest BAIRD’s residence was secured and a search warrant was executed. Items of note found during the search were a shotgun and zap straps, both believed to have been used during the home invasion.
With BAIRD in custody a judicial Bail hearing was held Wednesday April 26th. BAIRD was formally charged with Robbery, Unlawful Confinement, numerous firearms charges and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. BAIRD has been remanded in custody until Monday May 1st.
