File # 2017-580

Through the power of social media the owner of the safe turned into the Nanaimo RCMP has been located and reunited with her stolen birthday and special occasion cards.

Two days after the Nanaimo RCMP posted the story of the safe and cards to their Detachment Facebook account, the owner of the safe received a private message via FB. On April 19th the lawful owner contacted the investigator to claim the property.

Maria Milligan, the owner of the safe told the investigator it had been stolen on November 8th during a break in to their back yard shed. Taken were $1000 of tools and Milligan simply forgot to include the safe with the stolen items as there was no key and no valuables in it other than the cards. The stolen tools were eventually recovered on February 9th by the Port Alberni RCMP and are being held as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Milligan told the investigator the safe can be destroyed but she did ask for her cards back as there was some sentimental value to them. It’s pretty cool how quickly the word spreads on through social media. Without it we never have known what happened, said Milligan.
