Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Revelstoke RCMP pulled over a vehicle connected to an ongoing Calgary homicide investigation. The vehicle was tactically stopped by a combination of marked and unmarked police cars in the 700 Block of Victoria Road and the driver remained inside. Officers believe the driver matched the description of the person of interest wanted for questioning and considered armed and dangerous in connection with the Calgary investigation.

Officers set up containment around the vehicle, evacuated members of the public from neighbouring businesses, and a three block perimeter of the area was established. Additional emergency response resources, including the Revelstoke Fire Rescue Service, were staged nearby to support the ongoing incident. Efforts were made for over 5 hours to establish communications with driver who remained inside the vehicle and unresponsive.

The RCMPs Southeast District Emergency Response Team was called in and at approximately 6:08 pm (PST) they deployed a noise diversion device to elicit a response from the driver, and soon afterward officers approached the vehicle and located, without incident, a lone male inside the vehicle with undetermined injuries. No shots were fired by police. BC Ambulance, who was staged nearby, was called in and provided medical assistance. The man succumbed to his injuries at scene. No other persons were injured during the incident.

As per protocols, IIO BC has been notified and they are investigating. The scene and any evidence has been secured. Police expect to remain on scene throughout the evening. BC Coroner Service has been contacted and will be working to positively confirm the identity of the deceased man and the exact cause of death.

The RCMP will continue to liaise the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. Questions about the Calgary Police homicide investigation should be directed to their media relations unit at 403-428-7979.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be subject of independent investigation and verification by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit their website at External link, opens in a new windowwww.iiobc.ca.
