Yesterday, the West Shore RCMP welcomed 22 grade 9 students from Royal Bay and Belmont Secondary Schools to participate in a career day hosted by our Community Policing Unit.

Students were honorary officers for the day and were presented with a scenario involving a robbery. Different officers from our specialized police units gave presentations that walked the students through how this type of crime would be investigated.

Students in attendance all self identified as having an interest in policing. Law enforcement officers are an important resource in any community, said Mike Huck, Principal of Royal Bay Secondary School. The opportunity to participate in a scenario investigation for the day with officers offered students a real-life glimpse into what a career in law enforcement could look like.

The experience provided students with exposure to the various units at the detachment as students met with the Police Dog Service, Serious Crimes, Forensic Identification Section, Sketch Artist, Emergency Response Team, Bike Patrol officers and more.

Career day is a really meaningful opportunity to connect with students and continue building relationships. The students were able to get hands on experience on what our investigations look like by walking them through this mock scenario, said Cst. Justina Webb, West Shore RCMP Community Policing Unit. I hope we were able to inspire students through the sharing of our work and experiences to consider a future career in law enforcement.
