Dossier nº 2017-9173

Police car on the road next to black stolen vehicle.

On June 27, 2017, at around 18:40 p.m., West Shore RCMP were called to a complaint of an erratic driver at Goldstream Ave and Veterans Memorial Pkwy in Langford. Upon conducting checks on the licence plate, it was determined that the vehicle, a black Dodge Neon was stolen out of Saanich less than 3 hours earlier.

The vehicle was spotted shortly after by a West Shore RCMP dog handler and a traffic stop was attempted near Veterans Memorial Pkwy and Latoria Rd, however the suspect vehicle failed to stop. For public safety reasons, there was no pursuit initiated.

The stolen vehicle subsequently collided with two other moving vehicles on Latoria Rd, which led to the suspect vehicle to become disabled. Assisted by a General Duty member, the Police Dog Service (PDS) handler deployed his service dog Dash who quickly subdued the suspect.

The suspect, a 34 year old man of no fixed address was taken to hospital for minor injuries sustained by the dog bite and was released shortly after where he was lodged in cells and held for court the next morning. Police can confirm that he has a long criminal history.

We’re glad that nobody was got injured during this ordeal, says Cst. Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for West Shore RCMP. The police dog turned out to be a key asset in the apprehension of the suspect. Hopefully, this suspect will think twice next time about dashing.
