Surrey RCMP is updating the public that further charges have been laid in relation to a shooting at a residence in the Newton area.

On April 17, 2023 Surrey RCMP responded to a shooting in the 14800-block of 76 Avenue that left one man injured (previous media releases: initial release 2023-04-17; update release 2023-07-25).

Following this incident, the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit began an in-depth investigation into the shooting. In July, a 19-year-old man was arrested and charged. The ongoing investigation also led to officers identifying a second suspect, who is a male youth from Calgary, Alberta.

Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Investigators worked in coordination with Calgary Police Service, K-Division ALERT, BC Sheriffs and BC Provincial Crown.

On December 14, 2023, BC Prosecution Service laid the following charges against the male youth:

The male youth was taken into custody in Calgary on December 14, 2023. With the assistance of the Calgary Police, the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime team facilitated his transfer back to British Columbia where he remains in custody.

This marks another successful conclusion to a complex investigation that saw the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit arrest the two suspects who were at the time residing in another province, says Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Corporal James Mason. The hard work put into this investigation underscores the fact that the Surrey RCMP is committed to finding individuals near and far who have committed crimes in Surrey.

The Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit is notifying the public there are no outstanding suspects in relation to this investigation, and is grateful for any information provided to investigators which assisted this investigation.
