On July 16th at approximately 6:30pm, Surrey RCMP was advised of a vehicle on fire in the 3200 block of 176th Street where a male was observed pushing a wheelbarrow full of items away from the burning vehicle.
Upon police arrival, officers determined that the vehicle was stolen from another jurisdiction a few days earlier. The vehicle was associated to a number of break and enters in that jurisdiction where firearms had been stolen.
Surrey RCMP officers established a perimeter around the area where the male was last seen and were assisted by the Lower Mainland District RCMP’s Integrated Police Dog Service (PDS) who began tracking the male northbound along 176th Street. During this time, Surrey RCMP began receiving calls from several residents north of 176th Street about a male, who matched the description of the suspect from the stolen vehicle, attempting to take a vehicle or force his way into residences. The male was located by police in a berry field along 176th Street and after a brief physical struggle was taken into custody.
A 37 year old Lower Mainland resident, of no fixed address, is presently in custody and will appear in provincial court on Monday. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.
Surrey RCMP would like to thank the public for the number of calls received which assisted in locating this male and allowed police to successfully him into custody very quickly.
