A 16-year-old boy has died following an incident in the water at Lynn Canyon Twin Falls in North Vancouver.

On July 28th, 2017 at around 4:00 pm, the North Vancouver RCMP assisted the District of North Vancouver Fire Department and BC Ambulance Service in responding to a report of an unresponsive youth pulled from the water at Twin Falls in Lynn Canyon. Emergency services responded quickly and transported the boy to Lions Gate Hospital where he died from his injuries.

This is a devastating situation, said Constable Brett Cunningham of the North Vancouver RCMP Detachment. We're continuing to work with Park Officials and the District of North Vancouver to prevent these tragic incidents from happening. This high risk behaviour continues in spite of fences and cautionary signs posted by park officials.

The 16-year-old American was from Pennsylvania, visiting family in Vancouver. While swimming at the Lynn Canyon Twin Falls, he was swept away by strong currents and pulled underwater. Several bystanders responded to cries for help from family and friends, pulling the youth from the water and conducting CPR. Emergency Crews arrived on scene and were required to perform an 18 metre rope rescue in order to remove him from the isolated area of the park.

Family in Vancouver and Pennsylvania are both in contact with Emergency Services.

We want to thank the public and bystanders who assisted in pulling the youth from the water, said Constable Brett Cunningham. This is an extremely tragic situation for the family and friends of the youth. We recognize that the family is mourning the loss of their son and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
