March is Fraud Prevention Month, an international effort aimed at educating consumers on how to protect themselves and their assets. The RCMP is raising awareness about the risks of fraud.

With this year’s tax time underway it has also become prime time for fraud against unsuspecting residents. Scam artists are known to call and identify themselves (falsely) as being employees of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The caller then states that there is money either to be claimed by, or which is owed by, the victim. The fraudulent CRA caller then tells the victim that all that is required is for the victim to provide certain information so that their file can be "updated" and the monies released or paid.

The catch is the fraudsters are looking to gain personal identity and banking information from the victim so bank accounts can be accessed through false pretenses, said Cpl. Richard De Jong of the North Vancouver RCMP. It is an entirely criminal operation and one that can easily be avoided by using some discernment and common sense.

Important information found on the B.C. RCMP or Canada Revenue Agency website will help you be forewarned and forearmed in not becoming a victim.

If you want to confirm that a CRA representative has contacted you, call the CRA at 1-800-959-8281 for individual concerns or 1-800-959-5525 for business-related calls.

Report any frauds to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or call them at 1-888-495-8501.
