Male hitchhiker in custody after holding commercial driver at gunpoint

An adult male was taken into custody Monday evening after he allegedly held a commercial driver at gunpoint after being picked up hitchhiking along Hwy 5. The driver was unharmed in the ordeal.â•⁄

On Monday November 6, 2017 at approximately 6:30 pm, the Clearwater and Kamloops RCMP received a report that a male hitchhiker was holding a commercial truck driver at gunpoint after being picked up Near Avola North of Clearwater on Hwy 5. The vehicle continued Southbound and eventually was located and disabled by police near the Hwy 5 weigh scales with the driver being able to exit the vehicle unharmed. The suspect was eventually taken into custody without incident mid evening.

The incident required a temporary road closure at the weigh scale area. No further information is being released at this time.
