Impaired Driving is devastating for people in the community, says Cst. Robert Sierakowski, a member of Coquitlam RCMP’s Traffic Enforcement Section, I feel for them. It bothers me. That’s why I care about enforcing Impaired Driving.

Cst. Sierakowski is one of four Coquitlam RCMP officers who are recipients of the 2017 Alexa’s Team Award. Police officers are named to Alexa’s Team because in the space of one year they have removed at least 12 drivers who are impaired by drugs or alcohol from the road.

We are proud to have four Coquitlam RCMP officers who have made Alexa’s Team this year, says Superintendent Sean Maloney, Officer in Charge of Coquitlam RCMP, road safety is one of the top priorities of every RCMP detachment in BC and reducing Impaired Driving is a big part of that.

Alexa’s Team was created when four-year-old Alexa Renée Middelaer was hit and killed by an Impaired Driver in 2008. On April 12, 2017, Cst. Sierakowski received his Alexa’s Team Award alongside fellow Coquitlam RCMP officers Cst. Gurucharan Tiwana (two-time winner), Cst. Reuben Lamb, and Cst. David Bigcharles.

Cst. Bigcharles achieved the Alexa’s Team designation while working as a General Duty patrol officer. When I was younger, my cousin was killed in an Impaired Driving collision. It doesn’t matter who you are, I want to reach you and I want to help you.

Cst. Bigcharles knows his patrol area well and focuses on predicting where impaired drivers are likely to be over the course of a day. For anyone who might be considering getting behind the wheel after having ‘a few’ Cst. Bigcharles has a simple message:

Don’t do it. Plan ahead.
