On November 26, 2017, at approximately 6:15 p.m., the Burnaby RCMP received a report of a single vehicle collision in the 3200-block of Kensington Avenue. Burnaby RCMP attended the scene along with Burnaby Fire Department and EHS.

Through the initial investigation it was discovered that while travelling Northbound on Kensington Avenue between Joe Sakic Way and Lougheed Highway, a single vehicle lost control and struck a tree. As a result of the collision, a 47-year-old female passenger succumbed to her injuries at scene while the 28-year-old male driver was transported to hospital with serious, life threatening injuries.

The investigation is still in its early stages however police believe that speed may have been a contributing factor.

Although investigators were able to speak to witnesses at the scene, Burnaby RCMP is requesting the assistance of the public in identifying any other witnesses who have not yet spoken to police. The area is well travelled by commuters and the incident occurred during the dinner time rush hour.

If you are a witness to this serious and tragic collision, please contact the primary investigator Constable Kalicum of Burnaby’s Traffic Section or ask to speak to an on-duty Burnaby Traffic Services Supervisor at 604-646-9999.

While the cause of this accident is still under investigation, Burnaby RCMP would like to remind drivers to slow down, be mindful of changing road conditions and to adjust your speed accordingly.
