BC RCMP employees formed cycling teams in eight communities across the province to participate in the annual Ride Don’t Hide event on Sunday, June 23, 2019. Ride Don’t Hide is a community bike ride to raise funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association and to support BC RCMP employee wellness.

Participants in Metro Vancouver had the choice of biking in the police escorted 100km ride, or the 60km, 20km, or 10km distance. There was even a 5km walk around Central Park in Burnaby.

With first-hand experience supporting those in mental health crisis and working in a profession with high-risk for negative mental health impacts, BC RCMP are active participants in Ride Don’t Hide each year.

While many BC RCMP employees have been long time supporters of Ride Don’t Hide and for others, it was their first time cycling in the event. One new participant, is Civilian Member, Sidney Luk, who is in charge of the Protective Technical Services Section at BC RCMP Headquarters.

I wanted to contribute to a cause, says Luk. As a manager, I certainly have had to support employees who have had mental health issues. Now this gives me an opportunity to contribute to a broader cause.

Challenge by his son to join him on a bicycling trip to Italy, Luk started cycling to prepare. He had not been on a bike in 24 years so he was surprised how much he enjoyed it. He cycled the Tuscany Valley easily and when he got back, he started to cycle to work a 55-minute journey each way.

I lost 65 pounds and I feel fantastic! says Luk. So I signed up for the 100km ride.
Luk’s next challenge is the Grand Fondo Whistler to qualify for the UCI GranFondo World Championships in 2020.

BC RCMP is committed to creating a work environment that supports breaking down the stigma of mental health so no one has to suffer alone. It is important to raise awareness and drive change in responding to employee wellness.
