File # 2017-74731

A man remains in police custody and faces several potential charges after he allegedly collided with a marked RCMP cruiser, during an attempted traffic stop, before fleeing from police early morning Friday morning in Kelowna.

On Friday December 15, 2017 shortly after 4:00 am a general duty officer with the Kelowna RCMP spotted a suspicious grey Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driving with no lights on and notable damage in the area of Spall Road and Springfield Road. The officer followed the pickup into a parking lot and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, when the driver suddenly reversed into the marked police cruiser and fled the area in an erratic manner.

Our officers later spotted the same suspect vehicle being operated in a dangerous manner in Kelowna’s downtown core, states Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

RCMP resorted to the deployment of a spike belt as the vehicle travelled eastbound along Clement Avenue near Spall Road. The deployment of the tire deflating device successfully punctured all four tires, however the suspect continued driving on rims before he eventually fled from the vehicle on foot along Enterprise Way, says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

Several officers converged on the area and engaged in a foot pursuit. The suspect was taken into police custody near Cooper Road and Enterprise Way, adds Cpl. O’Donaghey.

Investigators have since determined that the grey Toyota pickup truck had been reported to police as stolen on December 1st from Bird Place in Kelowna. A subsequent search of the suspect vehicle turned up a fully loaded shotgun and break in tools.

The 21-year-old Kelowna man of no fixed address faces several potential charges and remains in police custody at this time.
