Children outside as part of the Junior Police AcademyEach summer children experience a full day of realistic police training as cadets at the Junior Police Academy in Surrey. The Academy is organized by members of the Surrey RCMP in partnership with the City of Surrey Parks and Recreation Department.

The goals of the Junior Police Academy are to:

  • Provide children with the opportunity to experience positive police interaction and to build positive relationships for the future.
  • Expose the children to the RCMP and the duties of a police officer.
  • Build a partnership with the City of Surrey Recreation Centers and promote them as being a safe & fun place to engage in socialization and educational activities.

The Junior Police Academy operates over five days in August for children between the ages of six to ten years old. Each participant receives a Junior Police Academy T shirt and a hot lunch. The Junior Police Academy is offered at no cost to each of the participants.

Participants will attend classes in drill instruction, crime scene investigation and complete a modified version of the fitness test mandatory for RCMP officers. Plastic Junior Mountie badges will be presented to each child who participated in the Junior Police Academy.

The children will also get the chance to see a police dog demonstration and are given the opportunity to examine police A.T.V's and general duty police vehicles.
