Crime Reduction Initiative

Crime Reduction is an important approach to RCMP service delivery. It has two goals:

  • To drive down the crime rate through a sustainable decline in the rate of offending
  • To increase confidence in the justice system as we work to keep communities safe

To achieve these goals, the Crime Reduction approach is characterised by three strategies:

  1. Evidence-based service delivery
  2. Results-based accountability
  3. Formal partnerships (e.g.: Crown, Corrections, Health, etc.)

Making it work in the community

Crime Reduction is tailored to the needs of the community. Strategies are continuously evaluated for success and improvement within the community through:

  • Analysis of data collected
  • Needs assessments
  • Collaboration with community partners

Typical applications of these include:

  • Identifying, targeting and rehabilitating prolific offenders
  • Designing of bylaws / regulations and public spaces / structures that target problem areas
  • Using Geographical Information System (GIS) for crime mapping
